South London powerhouse JGrrey is back with ‘believe,’ the latest gut punch from her debut album ‘you, me and jen,’ landing 16th October.
Produced by Humble The Great, the track catches JGrrey mid spiral, picking apart the different versions of herself she has built just to get through different rooms, different relationships, different days. It is exhausting trying to make sense of a world that feels like it is falling apart around you, and ‘believe’ does not shy away from that.
Set against a planet quite literally on fire, the track asks a huge question. What does it mean to have faith in something bigger than yourself? Whether that is the universe, the moon, a made up presence or something more divine, ‘believe’ finds comfort in letting go. It is a hopeful, aching track that clings to the idea that things can still change if you trust in something beyond your own two hands.
This is not JGrrey’s first reveal from the album. She has already dropped the introspective ‘pedigrree,’ the sultry neo soul number ‘take my hand’ with Bel Cobain, and the hip hop banger ‘bedbug’ featuring Brooklyn’s own Erick The Architect. Every track peels back a different layer of ‘you, me and jen.’
There is history behind this instinct to imagine. As a kid, JGrrey used to chat away to an invisible Jack Russell called Jack. Later, imagined conversations with her late grandfather became her way of working through the messiness of daily life. That same impulse runs through ‘believe,’ where she speaks to an unnamed “other,” left deliberately vague. She has never been one for the rigid rules of organised religion, but this track comes from something more personal. A faith built on trying your best, thinking of others and believing there might be something out there beyond what you can see.
And nobody explains the album better than JGrrey herself:
“In my life I have been here, there, up and down. Agoraphobic, a bad friend, an addict, a disappointment, a daughter, an intense girl you knew briefly, a bully, a comedian, a stylist, a sex worker, a good time and a fucking nightmare. When I was adopted, my mother Sadra told me I could do anything I wanted, and I’ve decided that I want to be here for you. Because there is no me without you.”
That is ‘you, me and jen’ in a nutshell. An album stitched together from every version of JGrrey that has ever existed.
Roll on 16th October. If ‘believe’ is anything to go by, this record will not just be heard, it will be felt.
